Our Estate

Chapter 1
We are
Cloudy Bay

The sea is our cradle but yet we can’t live without land: an island is the best compromise for our soul.

Our Origins

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Marlborough. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay’s founder - David Hohnen - was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has risen to become New Zealand’s leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world.

The winery was named after Cloudy Bay, a body of water explorer Captain James Cook came across during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. His discovery coincided with flooding in the region, which washed large amounts of sediment into the sea. Noticing the water’s opaque appearance, Cook cleverly christened the area Cloudy Bay.

Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also embodies New Zealand's luxury to the world. The luxury of space and time, of intimate moments and nature’s rarest qualities.

Many people can remember their first taste of Cloudy Bay, they were captivated by the wine.

The flagship wine region

Our pioneer and visionary spirit allowed us to secure vineyards on some of the most exceptional terroir within the Marlborough region. With their diversity and their quality, Cloudy Bay’s vineyards represent the essence of the region and embody it in wine. Grapes from the Wairau Valley bring the punch and the intense flavours, while the fruits from the Southern Valley ensure elegance and refinement. A rich palette of terroirs that provides nuances of aroma and flavours, bringing complexity to the wines.

Spacious & Inviting

Welcome to Cloudy Bay, one of the first five wineries to have ventured in Marlborough - back to the mid eighties -, and above all the one who put New Zealand in the wine map thanks to its early wide spread attractive Sauvignon Blanc.

The new Eldorado for Pinot Noir

In 2010, the Cloudy Bay winemaking team tasked themselves with a new challenge by embarking on a mission to make world class wine with one of the most complicated grapes - Pinot Noir -  in Central Otago. Identified as unsuitable for grape growing up to the mid 1980's, this challenging region, driven by extreme conditions, is not an easy terroir to tame.  Whereas the site selection is critical, we managed to secure vineyards in the most precious places of the region, the finest terroirs of the Cromwell Basin - namely Northburn and Calvert Vineyards.

Our People

Yang, born in the south western Chinese province of Sichuan, originally completed a degree in finance in China, before deciding to follow his love of wine to France. There, he studied winemaking in Montpellier and wine marketing in Bordeaux.
After 5 years of sales and marketing experience with a Bordeaux wine négociant and MHD China, his background of winemaking and commercial studies meant that he was ideally suited to become Estate Director of Chandon China, a position he held from 2011 to 2016.
In late 2016, Yang joined the Cloudy Bay team as Estate Director. He is passionate about ensuring that Cloudy Bay remains a beacon of quality for Marlborough wine, and that the Cloudy Bay story is told with passion worldwide.
Yang is married to Jing PAN, who is also a winemaker, and is a father of two young children – Derek and Meng Meng. When he’s not in the office, Yang loves cooking, singing and enjoying everything that life in Marlborough has to offer – especially foraging for perfect fresh ingredients.
